Consistent Talent Strategy: All of the People, All of the Time
Consistent Talent Strategy: Apply to All of the People, All of the Time
We’ve all heard the adage, “Leadership starts at the top”. For talent management to become a core strength, you need to start at the top as well.
Like many change initiatives, you should start by forming a leadership team that consists of HR, executive leaders and business unit leaders, with HR assuming the role of sherpa or guide. Appointing the right top team, structuring it appropriately, defining its agenda, and building the trust that enables its members to work well together is an important first step. This team will be responsible for developing, executing and championing a talent management strategy, which encompasses the entire ’employee lifecycle’, and includes all people in the organization, all of the time. Remember, it’s a process, not an event.
A new talent strategy may represent a culture change in your organization. Remember, you can’t trade your company’s culture in as if it were a used car. For all its benefits and blemishes, it’s a legacy that remains uniquely yours. Take time to visit the troops, understand their perspective, and involve them in the talent strategy planning. The leadership team should seek out employees at all levels – those who are well connected, sensitive to the company culture, and widely respected – to get their input on the strategy as well as their views on both the design and execution of intended changes. Be sure to respect their input…don’t dismiss it.
Using this tactic, creates a wave of internal champions and promotes user adoption throughout the organization with goals and results which can be measured, monitored and corrected over time.
